Mutations

Silent: Change to DNA in sequence, no change to amino acid sequence of protein. Basically one base is changed to another, but the result does not change the protein that it codes for. Exp: If our bases were UCU which codes for Serine and the bases were changed to UCC it would still code for Serine.

Missense: Point mutation that results in change to amino acid sequence of protein called for. Basically one base is changed to another which changes the protein it codes for. Exp: If our bases were CUU which codes for Leucine and the bases were changed to CCU then it would now code for Proline.

Nonsense: Change in one base in DNA sequence which results in an early stop codon, so the protein has fewer amino acids and it is shorter than normal. Basically one base is change to another and the change results in an early stop codon, making the chain stop sooner than it did before the base was changed. Exp: If our bases were UAC which codes for Tyrosine and the bases were changed to UAA then it would now code for a stop codon which means we would now stop here where as before we wouldn't have.

I hope this helps, I'm pretty sure I got that all right, I have trouble understanding molecular biology, lol!

this was good. thanks.

Ok so what about deletion mutation and inversion mutation, we need to know those too right?

There's a frame shift mutation which is the addition or deletion of 1-2 bases.

Inversion mutation is not a point mutation - it has to do with chromosomes.
